This research explored the possibility of using traffic accident hotspots as guidelines for formulating and monitoring policies to reduce traffic accidents on federal highways. To achieve its objectives, the model of identification of accident accumulation sites developed by CEFTRU / UnB was used to analyze the traffic accident database of the Federal Highway Police, with the proposal of criticality levels for the accumulation sites. . The results suggest that, in 2018, 2.85% of the kilometers of federal highways are responsible for 37.90% of traffic accidents and that the higher the level of criticality of the accumulation site, the greater their participation in the total of accidents. In its conclusions, the article suggests that the use of techniques for identifying accident accumulation sites can be useful for the formulation, monitoring and evaluation of traffic accident reduction policies, since it suggests where government action is most needed, optimizing the use of human and financial resources.
