This article can verify if the standard of citation NBR 10520 is linked to the practice of plagiarism in academic works. Thus, work with high indexes of similarity with other sources, indicated by the Turnitin originality verification software, was analyzed. It was tried to present the importance of the normalization in the construction of an original academic work, pointing it like ally in the development of the student during its academic formation. From the analysis, it was possible to perceive that the problems mentioned are mostly related to the lack of use or to the faulty application of the standard, characterizing plagiarism in the works. This result reinforces the need for teaching and understanding of the norm, as well as the student's education to act in a scientific environment.
